Four months after the celebration of half a decade of Super Rare Games’ bringing limited print physical games to Switch, a new platform, PlayStation 4 & 5 was set to debut. I was the Lead Designer on the first and all consecutive limited print PlayStation 4 & 5 physical releases.
New Platform. New market. New Rules.
The launch to this new market consisted of bringing back four iconic Super Rare Games’ switch physicals but now on a new platform. While the artwork for these games already existed on file, the transition to new templates, new asset ratios, new branding guidelines and new processes in order to get all designs approved by PlayStation wasn’t as smooth. It required searching through a lot of PlayStation’s documentation, investigating and dissecting limited print competitors' designs; having calls with contacts at PlayStation, getting multiple pre-approvals on designs, and a large magnitude of back and forth as with each step we were getting closer to getting the process nailed down for future releases.
Multiple Title Sheet Versions for internal and external approval. None of these were fully approved.
Additionally, one of the most prominent challenges was to keep the half-a-decade-long Switch-focused SRG Branding but now on a new platform. The solution we arrived at was to create two new spines within our collector’s shelves, with the same layout, but a different colour for each PlayStation platform. Subsequently, the circle on each release’s numbering and sticker would be changed to the iconic PlayStation square.
As of February 2024, Super Rare Games’ PlayStation Physicals have sold over 7500 limited printed edition copies across 10 releases and each release consisted of the design for the Title Sheet, PlayStation Disc Label, the 20-to-30-page accompanying Manual, Stickers, cardboard sleeve, Store Assets, Social media content and Teaser.
